85+ Delicious Apple Recipes

I have a chart held on my refrigerator door with two magnets. It's a food benefit chart and under apples I noticed the following benefits. Apples protect your heart, prevent constipation, block diarrhea, improve lung capacity and cushion the joints. That old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is most probably accurate.
According to Geoff Bond's "The Bond Effect - Natural Eating" apples are an alkali forming food. His work is described as "a study in nutritional anthropology or eating in harmony with our genetic programming". The over-consumption of acid-forming foods is a major dietary error today. Apples are an alkali forming food and thus a positive addition to our regular diet. In his "Ten Steps to Success", steps 1 and 3 include "eat at least one apple a day. In steps 5 and 7 he urges us to "eat two apples a day."
In his tables of good foods, apples appear in Table 1, "Foods to be eaten without restriction" and in Table 5, "Examples of good carbodhydrates allowing unrestricted consumption."
Scientific studies suggest eating apples on a regular basis may help prevent certain diseases and improve your overall health. Apples have no fat, cholesterol or sodium, and contain small amounts of potassium, which may promote heart health, help maintain healthy blood pressure and a healthy weight.
Writing for The Globe Gazette, in an article published: Wednesday, June 8, 2005, Charles Stuart Platkin, writes -
"Apples"
Why: They come in hundreds of varieties, they taste wonderful, and they're very low in calories. While apples aren't bursting with vitamins, they make up for that with their disease-fighting ability and portability. Packed with fiber, apples not only decrease cholesterol but also help protect against cancer.
Nutrients: A good source of vitamin C and fiber, apples are known mainly for their disease-fighting capabilities. A medium apple has 80 calories.
Health Perks: Apples are loaded with flavonoids such as quercetin, important for keeping blood vessels healthy, reducing inflammation throughout the body, preventing DNA damage that can lead to cancer and slowing cancer cell growth and reproduction, says Collins. Research from Cornell University recently suggested that apples could fight Alzheimer's disease as well. Accord-ing to Rui Hai Liu, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of food science at Cornell University, the antioxidant concentration in apples is among the highest of all fruits. The antioxidant content of apples was originally underestimated because bound phenolics (phenolics that survive stomach digestion) weren't included, says Liu.
Purchasing tips: Apples can be bought year-round. Green's advice: Choose apples with smooth, shiny, clean skin and good color. Avoid those with dull skin or bruises and punctures. Store apples in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Uses: Throw an apple in your bag as you leave the house and have it as a daily snack. For a delicious, low-cal dessert, dust with cinnamon and Splenda and bake."
Quoting from WWW.BestApples.com -
"The disease-fighting profile of apples provides a multitude of health benefits, including a potential decreased risk of cancer and heart disease. Several recent studies suggest apples may provide a "whole-body" health benefit.
A number of components in apples, most notably fiber and phytonutrients have been found in studies to lower blood cholesterol and improve bowel function, and may be associated with a reduced risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke, prostate cancer, type II diabetes and asthma. Preliminary research from Finland indicates diets with the highest intake of apple phytonutrients were associated with a 46 percent reduction in the incidence of lung cancer. Findings indicate that two apples a day or 12 ounces of 100% apple juice reduced the damaging effects of the “bad” LDL cholesterol."
Our "Mouth Watering Apple Recipes" ebook will help you exploit all the benefits of the apple prepared in a wide variety of ways. We suggest substituting raw unrefined brown sugar, stevia powder or Splenda® wherever possible for sweeteners in the receipes presented.
